Did you know...
1. They aren’t true berries.
Botanically, blackberries are aggregate fruits—each little bubble (called a drupelet) is its own tiny fruit with its own seed.
2. Humans have eaten them for thousands of years.
Archaeologists have found blackberries in the stomach of a 2,500-year-old body known as the "Haraldskær Woman."
3. They change color as they ripen.
Blackberries start out green → red → deep purplish black. They only develop their full sweetness when completely ripe.
4. The plant is incredibly resilient.
Many blackberry bushes grow aggressively and are considered invasive in parts of the world due to their fast spread and strong roots.
5. They’re packed with antioxidants.
Blackberries are rich in vitamin C, K, manganese, and anthocyanins—giving them powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
6. They’re related to roses.
Blackberry plants belong to the Rosaceae family, meaning they’re cousins to roses, apples, strawberries, peaches, and almonds.
7. Blackberry juice was once used as dye.
Historically, people used the deep purple juice to dye fabrics and even write with.
8. A group of blackberries is called a drupelet cluster.
If you ever want to sound fancy at a picnic!
And they taste great! Cool huh?!
