"Leila – Our Little Nefertiti"
Oil on Wood Panel 60 x 80 cm, 2025, Netherlands
I had the privilege of painting Leila, a remarkable young lady who has been one of my art students for several years. Leila has been bravely battling cancer for much of her life, yet her spirit remains unshaken. Despite ongoing chemotherapy treatments and countless hospital visits, she continues to attend school whenever possible—eager to learn, create, and take part in every opportunity that comes her way.
Her courage and determination are deeply inspiring. Leila radiates curiosity, intelligence, and a contagious energy that lights up every room. She never allows her illness to define her or limit her joy; instead, she lives with purpose, grace, and quiet strength.
When I approached her mother to ask permission to paint her, she told me that Leila is their “little Nefertiti.” The comparison couldn’t be more fitting. The name Nefertiti, derived from the Egyptian words nefer and iti, means “The Perfect One Has Arrived.” It carries the essence of beauty, dignity, and resilience—a true symbol of queenly bravery and grace.
You can read more about Leila in my blog, Brushstrokes & Bread.
I hope her story moves and uplifts you as much as she continues to inspire me.
